What You'll Learn

Ableton Piano Roll

If you’re using MIDI and Ableton Live, you’ll be using the Ableton piano roll – a display within Ableton that provides control over all things MIDI.  In this course, you’ll see how scales, chords and arpeggios can be visualized and played with the help of built-in MIDI devices (Chord and Scale).

Where You’ll Start…

To get the ball rolling, this course revisits the theory behind the piano roll and brings you up to speed.  Electronic musicians have incredible tools and knowing how music theory works behind the scenes will help you work faster and smarter.  This course offers tips about arpeggiators and sub bass as well.

Automatic Melodies!

For many artists and producers, the Ableton piano roll is where the magic happens.  It is where you write melodies and usually ‘draw’ in your chords.  Seeing how music theory lays out across the piano roll and how to do the same thing with MIDI devices can jump start your creativity.  Plus, watch how to use Chord and Scale devices to make creating easier and come up with hooks you may not have ever come up with on your own!  Write, edit and adjust your melodies, hooks and harmonies by ear once you master using more flexible tools.

When You’re Finished…

By the time you’re finished with this course, you’ll clearly understand the layout and functional capabilities of MIDI devices for building faster, better melodic hooks.  Using the Ableton piano roll will feel more complete and purposeful.  Plus, you’ll develop an understanding of how to apply music theory more quickly and creatively.  If you have any doubts about the piano roll, Scale or Chord devices… this course will empower and transform your creative process and productivity.

This course is helpful. But, I need actual tips for melody writing. Do you have any courses on that?

were especially helpful lessons. I’m wasn’t really finding a good way to understand and use these. But, I suspected they’d should be simple to learn. Over all these lessons were good, but I especially liked those. Any chance you could make more videos about those (and other MIDI stuff)?
