Layering MIDI in Ableton
Appropriate for Level 2
What You'll Learn
Compose with Smart MIDI Routing
MIDI makes it possible to create layered productions (bass, lead, pads and more) from a single harmonic idea. This can be accomplished by creatively routing MIDI messages (based on filtering and note value) into all the layers/instruments in your production. This course demonstrates this approach in detail, helping MIDI and Ableton users to get more creative quickly.
Where You’ll Start…
You’ll start this course with an overview of what to expect and how we’re going to get to the final phase – a full production based on only one original musical idea.
Layering MIDI
Each layer will be covered in detail, including:
- Bass
- Sub Bass
- Piano/harmony
- Lead (Dance Dot)
- Pad
When You’re Finished…
After you’ve finished the course, you’ll have a clear understanding (and actionable demonstrations to follow) regarding the strategy of MIDI layering, so that you can use it in your next production. The demonstrations in this course are done entirely in Ableton Live 10, but the MIDI layering concepts can be applied in many DAWs. If you’re looking to get a fresh, creative perspective on your production process, this course will offer you new insights for using MIDI to its fullest potential. If you’re an Ableton user then all the better 🙂
