Who should learn this skill?

This skill benefits electronic musicians and producers who work with programmed beats and are seeking to 'humanize' highly quantized rhythms.

Primary Concepts for This Skill

  1. Humanizing is often a purposeful de-quantization of strict timing in electronic instruments.
  2. Humanizing is most effective when applied to slight timing variations and MIDI velocity variations.
  3. While live performances often are too inexact, a strictly quantized performance can feel “lifeless”.
  4. If your tools (DAW, plugins, etc.) have ‘iterative quantize’ capabilities then these are often preferable to strict quantizing because they allow more of the ‘human’ performance to be preserved while also allowing the rhythmic benefits of quantizing.
