This is a powerful concept that help composers convey authentic emotions in any key by using modes.
Primary Concepts for This Skill
- Tonics are the tones/pitches at the beginning of a key/scale. C is the tonic of C major or C minor.
- Modal tonics are the tones/pitches at the beginning of a mode. Modes are extracted from scales. For example, the ‘Dorian’ mode is extracted from the major scale and simply treats the 2nd scale degree of any major scale as the ‘tonic’.
- Modal tonics are helpful when writing a modal melody.
