What is this Beat Toolkit About?

This Beat Toolkit is a collection of PDF “Beat Maps” and an Ableton drum rack.  The purpose is to make it as simple as possible for beginning electronic music and EDM producers to start making beats that are based on some kind of perspective of how different genres and sub-genres came to be (musically).

The best way to use this toolkit is as follows:

  1. Add the included drum rack to a new Ableton Set.
  2. Use the PDF drum maps to “program” the different beats into clips in Ableton (ideally using a Push, if you have one).
  3. Tweek and modify these basic beats to taste - they are intended to be simple enough to allow you a LOT of creative latitude, but effective enough to impart each genre’s “flavor” onto any track they’re added to.
  4. Use the included Ableton Set and clips to study details about the loops, if necessary.  Also, feel free to sample, remix the audio loops for each genre, too.
  5. Practice programming the beats to memorize them
    1. Notice that many beats use snares on 2 and 4
    2. Notice which beats have kicks on downbeats (house) vs. upbeats (dubstep)
    3. Notice how claps sound different than snare (Techno vs. House, for example)

This Beat Toolkit will help anyone who doesn’t know much about EDM beat patterns to learn a lot very quickly.  BUT… This toolkit doesn’t claim to be the be-all-end-all reference on beats.  There is so much that can be done to make these beats more unique… that is the job of an artist, right?

Have fun and keep in touch!
